About
This class explores the foundations and essentials of ujjayi pranayama. Pranayama refers to the art and discipline of regulating and extending the breath to influence both body and mind – cultivating steadiness, awareness, and vitality. In ujjayi pranayama, the breath is consciously lengthened and deepened through controlled cycles of inhalation and exhalation. In Iyengar Yoga, this pranayama is first introduced in a reclining position, allowing the breath to be observed and refined without the intrusion of physical strain that can obscure its more subtle qualities. Once these techniques are established, they are gradually transferred to the more classical upright seated asanas. This class emphasises the first five stages of ujjayi pranayama as taught in the Iyengar method. It begins in reclining Savasana, developing awareness of the natural breath and cultivating evenness between inhalation and exhalation. The sequence then progressively lengthens the exhalation phase, followed by the inhalation, before combining the two in an even and steady rhythm. The same process is later explored from a seated position in Sukhasana. Detailed prop setups are demonstrated for both the reclining and seated positions, with guidance on how to support the body, reduce strain, and focus more clearly on the breath. This class is ideal for consolidating the essentials of pranayama. It helps to restore energy levels and leaves you with a sense of clarity, calm, and renewed vitality.
