Standing Shoulder Poses – Weekly Intermediate Class 56

Focus: This class is the third in our series of classes on yoga poses for improving shoulder mobility. It focusses on shoulder opening poses that can be practiced from a standing position. The sequence features an array of modified classical asanas. The modifications help to enhance the therapeutic benefits that can be brought to the shoulders. These poses are commonly practiced within the Iyengar method. The sequence attempts to be consistent with Iyengar teachings, whilst also being practical and accessible to a home practice. This class can be practiced as a stand-alone class, or in conjunction with the other shoulder classes in this series.

Key Poses: ardha mukha svanasana, vasisthasana, trikonasana, parsvottanasana

Equipment: Mat, blanket, 2 blocks, belt

Level: Intermediate

Duration: 40 min

Love this shoulder series. Re: Anita’s comment about straightening the elbows on the last version of dd, I was not able to have the strength to straighten my arms as well. Something to work towards. This entire shoulder sequence was so comprehensive, simple, and I feel safe. Thank you for this lesson.

  2. Ragini G

I have feel slight pain in shoulders when i perform any shoulder related asanas..will this poses help me??

    • Rod

      Hi Ragini,

Thank you for your question. It’s hard to know from what you describe what is appropriate. I am not sure whether it is normal stretching you are feeling or something that is problematic. I would encourage you to send me an email so that we can discuss it further. I would be happy to assist you with it.

  3. Anita S

    Hi Rod
Apart from the challenge of the last version of downward dog where you had to lift your elbows off the floor, I feel more clarity after this and all your classes.
Thanks for the practice and namaste.

    • Rod

You are most welcome Anita. There may be some adjustments to work with if you are struggling with your elbows in downward dog. Feel free to touch base with me if you want some more input with that. Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback!
