Home Practice Tips 5 years, 4 months ago
Hi all,
Thanks to Rod for providing this space for fellow members to interact with each other. I have really valued Yoga Selection classes and these forums are a welcome extension of the services already offered.
I have mostly relied on studio classes up until this point and am relatively new to home practice. As it has become quite impractical for me to attend face to face classes recently I have wanted to get a bit more information serious about how I do yoga at home.
I have a fairly practical question about the best way to set up a good supply of yoga props on a limited budget. I don’t have anything except a mat at this stage. I wondered what others have done about this and how to prioritise the various options so I can still have a few options with home practice without having all the gear at first.
Thanks for any tips anyone is able to provide.
Hi Jane,
I would recommend you to use things/furniture in your home and try to be creative.
My first purchase of props would be 1 belt and 2 cork blocks/bricks.
Blankets: you probably have some blankets or towels at home. Works just as well til you want to buy a “yoga blanket”
A chair: use your chairs at home, a bench or similar
Flat foam blocks – This would be my second purchase (4 of them) but in the meantime you can use blankets or ledges
Bolster – use blankets and/or blocks or cushions from your home
Good luck!
Hi Lova,
Thanks very much for taking the time to give that advice. It gives me a good starting point. I have been having a look at the different blocks online and wasn’t really sure which ones to get. I will give the cork ones a try.
Hi Jane, furniture removal blankets are really cheap, you can find them on Amazon or on other hardware/international movers sites.
Hope this helps, happy practice, Francesca
Furniture removal blankets are a great idea. Thanks for that tip a Francesca! I have been avoiding buying blankets due to limited budget.
Thanks Francesca for that tip. I looked into it and managed to find some cheap blankets. It’s helped a lot 👍🙏
I only had belt and cork thingie for several years – but receiving a chair as a gift last autumn was really great. I also had a limited budget but was lucky that a girl I let stay over whilst doing part time studies wanted to give something in return for the hospitality. I see that I probably could have asked for contributions towards a yoga chair from family members or friends – as I found it so much better than my own wooden and wriggly chairs… so that’s my recommendation – make a chair a saving goal!
I personally like the wooden block because they give me more feedback. Of course you have to get use to them because they’re harder . My second choice is the cork blocks . I do not like the foam , too soft and wobbly.
