About
This 40-minute class explores the close relationship between restorative yoga and pranayama, using carefully supported poses to cultivate ease in the body and a deeper awareness of the breath. The sequence features classical restorative postures including Supta Baddha Konasana and Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, chosen for their ability to quieten the nervous system, open the chest, and encourage a smooth, even breathing rhythm. Throughout the practice, particular attention is given to observing the natural movement of the breath through different regions of the torso, including the abdomen, side ribs and sternum, while developing a greater understanding of the diaphragm and its role in healthy, unrestricted breathing. Exploring these subtle breathing patterns within restorative postures helps make many of the fundamental principles of pranayama easier to experience and understand. Before progressing to seated pranayama, the class includes a specialised Savasana using carefully folded blanket supports that heighten awareness of the breath and refine sensitivity to its subtle movements, creating an ideal bridge between restorative asana and conscious breathing. Ujjayi inhalation and exhalation are then practised in both reclining and seated positions before the class concludes with a quiet, restful Savasana, leaving you feeling calm, centred and deeply refreshed. Suitable for students wishing to establish or deepen a pranayama practice, this class provides a calm and accessible introduction to the art of conscious breathing through the support of restorative yoga.
