About
This class presents a thoughtful, progressive approach to supporting neck health through a combination of mobility, strength, and postural awareness. Using accessible variations of Matsyasana, it begins from a simple reclining cross-legged position before gradually introducing height with yoga blocks placed under the thoracic spine. This supported lift allows the chest to open and the head to release back in a controlled way, helping to restore gentle extension in the neck while avoiding unnecessary strain. Importantly, the class recognises that the neck does not function in isolation – restricted movement in the upper back, particularly around the C7–T1 junction, can increase mechanical load on the cervical spine. By improving mobility in the thoracic region and developing strength through poses such as Purvottanasana, the sequence aims to promote more balanced distribution of effort across the spine. These coordinated actions can support improved range of motion, reduce stiffness associated with prolonged sitting, and encourage more efficient postural alignment. The progression continues into chair-supported backbends, where these principles are further refined, offering a practical and sustainable way to maintain neck comfort and resilience in daily life.
